The Academy of Sciences of Moldova Elects New Honorary Members — Distinguished Personalities of World Science

On April 23, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM) elected new honorary members during the 8th Session of the General Assembly of Full and Corresponding Members, paying tribute to internationally renowned personalities for their outstanding contributions to the advancement of science and for their active role in strengthening academic cooperation.

The decision was adopted following a rigorous evaluation process, carried out in accordance with legal provisions and academic regulations. The nominations, submitted by the scientific sections of the ASM, were examined within the respective specialized assemblies, while the candidates’ activity was presented by expert commissions, which highlighted their exceptional scientific achievements, the international impact of their work, and their contributions to developing collaborative relations with the Republic of Moldova.

The new honorary members of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova are world-renowned scholars and consistent promoters of international scientific cooperation.

In the field of life sciences, the distinction was awarded to Professor James Edward Rothman, Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine in 2013, recognized for his fundamental discoveries concerning the mechanisms of vesicle transport in cells, and to Academician Victor Voicu, a distinguished personality in medicine and pharmacology.

In the field of exact and engineering sciences, the newly elected honorary members are Professor Kornelius Nielsch, a leading specialist in materials physics and nanotechnologies; Professor Klaus Mainzer, known for his remarkable contributions to the philosophy of science and artificial intelligence; and Acad. Prof. Horia-Nicolai Teodorescu, distinguished for his research in intelligent systems and their applications.

In the field of social, economic, humanistic sciences and the arts, the honorary distinction was awarded to Professor Liviu-Bogdan Ciucă, a prominent representative of legal sciences and public life, and to Professor Pompiliu Crăciunescu, appreciated for his innovative approaches to the study of Romanian literature and culture.

Each of the new honorary members has an impressive academic career, reflected in hundreds of scientific publications, participation in international projects, and essential contributions to the development of modern research directions. Their scientific activity is complemented by a constant commitment to training new generations of specialists and to promoting international academic cooperation, including through direct collaborations with research and higher education institutions in the Republic of Moldova.

Through this election, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova reaffirms its openness to the genuine values of science and its commitment to strengthening international academic dialogue.
