In the 20th century, science radically changed the world: it revolutionized medicine, brought new sources of energy and light, created technologies that transformed human life, and opened new horizons for society. The experience gained unequivocally confirms that the progress of a nation — and of humanity as a whole — is determined by the progress of science.

Today, in the 21st century, humanity faces complex and existential challenges: health crises, the need for clean and sustainable technologies, food, ecological and energy security, and the preservation of peace and global balance. Decisions are made by politicians, but real solutions to these challenges are expected from scientists.

In this context, we, the members of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, together with the Nobel Laureates Prof. Hiroshi Amano and Prof. James E. Rothman, call upon the society and decision-makers of the Republic of Moldova to:

• recognize and treat science and education as national strategic priorities;
• provide consistent and tangible support — through coherent policies and adequate funding — to researchers and scientific institutions;
• encourage young people to follow the path of knowledge and innovation;
• promote partnerships between science, economy, and culture for sustainable development.

Science is not only for scientists — it is for the whole of society and for future generations. Only through investment in knowledge can we build a sustainable, safe, and prosperous future.

Signed,

On behalf of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova
Prof. Ion TIGINYANU, President

Prof. Hiroshi AMANO, Honorary Member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova

Prof. James E. ROTHMAN, Scholar with Bessarabian ancestral roots
